Certified vs. Sworn Translations

Certified Translation

A certified translation is a complete translation of a document accompanied by a signed certification from the translator affirming the completeness and accuracy of the translation and the translator’s competency to translate between the applicable languages.

Certified translations are commonly used for immigration, legal, academic, government, and other official purposes.

Sworn Translation

A sworn translation is an official translation prepared by a translator authorized under the requirements of the applicable jurisdiction.

For matters requiring an official sworn translation for use in Spain, AMN International can coordinate translation by an appropriately qualified sworn translator.

The appropriate translation type depends on the receiving authority, destination country, and intended use of the document.

150+ Languages Supported

AMN International coordinates certified translations in 150+ languages, supporting documents used throughout the United States and internationally.

Translation requests are reviewed according to the document, language pair, receiving authority, intended use, and any applicable certification or sworn-translation requirements.

Common Documents We Translate

Translation services commonly include:

• Birth, marriage, and death certificates
• Divorce decrees, judgments, and court records
• Diplomas, transcripts, and academic records
• Powers of attorney and sworn affidavits
• Citizenship and immigration documents
• Passports, identification documents, and personal records
• Corporate records and business documents
• Contracts and international property documents
• Estate and inheritance documents
• Supporting documents for apostille or embassy legalization matters

When a document matter also requires an apostille, federal authentication, or embassy or consular legalization, AMN can coordinate translation as part of the broader international document workflow. The appropriate sequence depends on the document, destination country, and receiving authority.

Certified Translation FAQs

Are certified translations accepted for official use?

Acceptance requirements vary by receiving authority and intended use. AMN International coordinates professional certified translations accompanied by the appropriate translator certification. Any authority-specific requirements are reviewed as part of the translation request.

Does USCIS require certified translations?

USCIS requires foreign-language documents submitted in support of a benefit request to include a full English translation. The translator must certify that the translation is complete and accurate and that they are competent to translate from the foreign language into English.

What is the difference between a certified and non-certified translation?

A certified translation includes a formal translator certification affirming the completeness and accuracy of the translation. A non-certified translation does not include that formal certification and may be appropriate for informational or other non-official purposes.

What is a sworn translation?

A sworn translation is an official translation produced by a translator authorized under the requirements of the applicable jurisdiction. For matters requiring sworn translations for use in Spain, AMN International can coordinate services with an appropriately qualified sworn translator.

Does my translation need to be notarized?

Not necessarily. Translation, certification, notarization, apostille, and legalization are separate requirements. Whether any additional step is necessary depends on the receiving authority and intended use of the document.

How do I know which translation service I need?

Send AMN a clear copy of the document along with the language needed, receiving authority or destination country, intended use, and deadline. We can review the matter and help identify the appropriate translation workflow.
